Padraig Harrington = Happy Gilmore = 30 yards further!!

You will, I’m sure, have seen or at least heard of Happy Gilmore the film character who runs at the ball before launching the most prodigious drives and amazing golf shots. But, does science bear out the theory of hitting longer drives by running to generating more power? You bet it does, Padraig launches drives 30 yards past his normal average drives of 296 yards. See the shots and the science of this theory in this clip from Fox Sports’ Sport Science. Visit their site.

Phil Mickelson #18 Colonial – Crowne Plaza Invitational 2008

Amazing golf shots and Phil Mickelson go together! Hardly a tournament goes by without him pulling off some spectacular shot, but his closing out of the 2008 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial was something special. Missing the fairway left into rough in trees down the 72nd hole with the tournament on the line is not advisable but somehow Mickleson was able to conjure up a 140 yard wedge shot under the branches of one tree and up over the top of another tree to finish 9 feet from the flag. Inevitably the putt was holed and the tournament duly won.

Fuzzy Zoeller – Hole in One Allianz Championship 2006

Some amazing golf shots defy description but I’m going to try anyway!
After Fuzzy Zoeller had played his tee shot on #16 Glen Oaks Country Club in the 2006 Allianz Championship he was distinctly underwhelmed. His 7 iron shot had run through the green and settled on the second cut of the apron, he even starting walking and asked his caddie for the sand wedge he would need to play his second shot.
Fully ten seconds later the ball started to move back down the slope towards the hole. As the gallery and commentary team watched incredulously the ball tracked towards and then dropped into the hole for an amazing hole in one, Zoeller didn’t even know what had happened until the crowd erupted!

Vijay Singh Masters Practice #16 Skip Hole in One

The practice days at The Masters are famous for the light hearted banter on hole #16. Players are encouraged to have a go at skipping the ball across the water “bouncing bomb” style and onto the green. This amazing golf shot by Viyay Singh came during practice for the 2009 tournament, not only did he achieve the feat but the ball took a break and curled straight into the hole for an unbelievable hole in one.

See three great different views of this amazing golf shot!!!

I was alerted to another video of the same shot, this time from behind the tee, that also shows the great cameraderie of the players. Many thanks to Barb for taking time to comment, much appreciated.

Yet another view of this amazing golf shot. You get an incredible view of the ball skimming the water from this angle.
